How to check a used automatic before you buy
A 10-minute checklist that could save you an expensive gearbox repair.
On the test drive
Start the car from cold. Move through P, R, N and D — engagement should be quick with no clunk. Accelerate gently and firmly; changes should be smooth with no flaring revs or slipping.
Warning signs
Jerky changes, a delay before moving off, whining noises, warning lights or a burnt smell all point to gearbox trouble. Walk away or get it inspected.
Paperwork
Check the service history for gearbox fluid changes and run a vehicle history check for finance owed, write-offs and mileage discrepancies.
