DSG, CVT, torque converter: automatic gearboxes explained

Not all automatics are the same. Here's what each type feels like and what to watch for.

Torque converter

The traditional automatic. Smooth and generally durable, found in many Toyotas, Mazdas, BMWs and Mercedes. Regular fluid changes help it last.

Dual-clutch (DSG, PDK, DCT)

Fast, efficient changes — common in VW Group cars. Can feel hesitant at low speed. Ask for evidence of gearbox servicing, which is often due every 40,000 miles.

CVT

No fixed gears, very smooth and efficient, common in Toyota hybrids and Hondas. Some drivers dislike the 'droning' sound when accelerating hard.

Automated manual (AMT)

A manual gearbox with a robot doing the clutch. Cheap, but changes can be jerky. Test drive one before committing.
